It all began in April 2023 as a humble outreach activity for the University of Santo Tomas -Legazpi (UST-L) BSA batch 2000 alumni. The project was named after the item we gave, 'Tsinelas,' and St. 'Tomas' Aquinas, the patron saint of UST-L.
The goal is to provide decent footwear to learners of remote elementary schools who attend classes either wearing damaged slippers or none at all. Aside from the slippers, we also distributed essential school supplies and conducted feeding activities.
Over time, the project has grown to encompass a wide range of support. In addition to the initial slippers, school supplies, and feeding activities, we now provide vitamins, water tumblers, rosaries, food packs (pang-baon), lunch meals, and even entertainment in the form of a magic show.
In October 2023, The school Bags to those In Need Initiative was incorporated into the Tsinelas ni Tomas Project. Back then, it was only available to SPED students.
The goal is so practical: to lessen the burden of students with special needs of the daily rigors of attending school by simply providing them with a decent bag they will easily carry.
Recently, we expanded its scope and included primary-level learners from Kindergarten to Grade 2. We believe that providing them with new school bags boosts their self-esteem other than the ease of carrying their things.
In January 2024, the GASERA (Give A Solar Energized Reading Aid) Project was introduced as a significant component of the Tsinelas in Tomas Program, which aims to provide sustainable solutions to the challenges of studying at night in the off-the-grid communities in the Bicol Region.
Gasera is a traditional lamp used in many houses in the Philippines when there is no electricity, especially in places far from cities or in rural areas.
The GASERA PROJECT is a campaign to help bring solar reading lights to learners living in remote rural areas without access to electricity.
The goal is not just to provide light for studying at night but to illuminate a brighter future for these learners by inspiring them to believe in their potential despite their economic circumstances.
In July 2024, the UPIN IPIN Project, a vital component of the Tsinelas in Tomas Program, was launched. This project aims to promote oral health among public elementary school learners.
UPIN IPIN (Ugaliing Pagtibayin at Ingatan Natin ang IPIN) Project is a campaign to provide essential dental health kits, which include toothbrushes and toothpaste, among others, to public elementary school learners.
Our collective goal is to promote that oral health is essential to a child’s overall health & well-being.
Spreading awareness among the learners regarding the importance of regular brushing and the consequences caused by poor oral hygiene can help avoid a lifetime of discomfort and damage to their self-esteem.
